The Microbial, Genomic, and Arthropod Laboratory (MGAL) at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa is a centralized molecular and analytical core that provides full service genomic library preparation, high-throughput DNA/RNA extractions, small molecule analysis, and routine isolation and storage of microbial strains. We specialize in environmental samples and offer low-cost fees for training and walk-in instrument use. We also function as a bio-repository of experimental arthropod models including Drosophila and other endemic insects.

The Imaging Core (IC), formerly the Biological Electron Microscope Facility (BEMF) core, provides both internal and external users with access to state-of-the-art instrumentation, training, flow cytometry services, and advanced microscopy (light, epifluorescence, confocal and laser tweezers/microdissection microscopy, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy) on a recharge basis. Clients may be trained to use instruments independently, elect to have a technician operate the instruments in their presence, or may contract the technician to conduct the work and provide finished products. The IC also provides workshops, demonstrations, and laboratory sessions for UH undergraduate and graduate courses, staff, and faculty.

The MIFC Core at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center offers a variety of optical analysis instrumentation from specialized light microscopes to bioluminescence preclinical imagers to flow cytometers for multicolor cellular analysis. For a full list of instrumentation, please see our website.

As the sole resource for flow cytometry, cell sorting and state-of-the-art immunological services in the western-most IDeA state, the Molecular and Cellular Immunology Core, through COBRE support, has accelerated research productivity, in terms of publications and extramural funding. Emphasis has also been applied to developing new or customized immunological methods for COBRE Investigators and other Core users. In addition, regularly scheduled training sessions are held to enrich the educational and mentoring experience for COBRE Investigators and other faculty and students across the university and broader research community. By centralizing immunological services and resources to this Core, COBRE Investigators and other researchers will be more efficiently served and the use of expensive equipment will be maximized.

Experienced staff will provide hands-on training to investigators in conducting IBC/IACUC/CHS approved MCI research protocols. Please refer to MCI training document to help you get started on the process for obtaining clearance to work in the JABSOM Molecular and Cellular Immunology Core Facility.

Research on microbial agents, which cause lethal diseases in humans and for which effective drugs or preventive vaccines are not available, must be conducted by well-trained investigators in specially built, well-maintained laboratories. The BSL-3/ABSL-3 Biocontainment Core provides the triad of service, research and development, and education and training to investigators at the university and the wider research community.

The UHCC GBSR is a Shared Resource at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center. The genomic analysis services offered are: (1) DNA/RNA isolation, plating, and quality analysis, (2) Custom genotyping, (3) Real-Time qPCR-based gene expression, copy number and methylation assays, (4) Pyrosequencing, (5) Affymetrix and Illumina microarray-based assays, (6) Next Generation Sequencing on NextSeq500, iSeq100, (7) NanoString nCounter analysis, and (8) Consultation. We also offer bioinformatic analysis services for various omics data.

Services provided include animal husbandry and genotyping, murine echocardiography,reporter gene imaging, hemodynamic monitoring, tail vein plethysmography, surgical procedures including infarction, aortic banding, wire injury, tail vein injection, pump implantation, and training in all of these procedures.
